Case Studies

Digital Wall Security System in Kufstein

Precision sensor technology for the long-term preservation of historic buildings

In collaboration with the City of Kufstein, GMD is implementing a self-contained multi-sensor solution at Kufstein Fortress to monitor historic walls. The system continuously records micro-movements, vibrations and environmental influences, and detects potential hazards at an early stage even under challenging conditions in hard-to-reach areas and subject to heritage conservation requirements. The combination of seismic sensors, acceleration measurement and Edge IoT enables precise real-time analysis of structural stability.

The result: early detection of changes, targeted maintenance and a sustainable contribution to the protection of the historic building fabric as well as safety against rockfall.

Alpine drinking water monitoring

Neue Prager Hütte (DAV)

In collaboration with the DAV, GMD is implementing an innovative, self-sufficient sensor system at the Neue Prager Hütte to monitor the drinking water supply in high-altitude mountain regions. The system reliably measures spring flow, water levels and water extraction even under extreme conditions at altitudes of over 2,800 metres, without the need for existing energy or data infrastructure. A specially developed IoT architecture enables the stable transmission of measurement data to the GMD® platform, where it is processed for the DAV.

The result: precise real-time data on water availability, optimised planning of hut operations and a sound basis for climate-adaptive water management strategies.

AI-powered channel monitoring

Kufstein: A pioneering region for smart flood prevention

In collaboration with the city of Kufstein, GMD is implementing a smart monitoring system to record water levels, flow velocities and log jams in urban waterways. The project was prompted by recurring flood events, particularly the flooding in July 2021. The aim is to create a system that detects critical developments at an early stage and issues reliable warnings. The solution combines radar, seismic and optical sensors into a robust integrated system. The real-time data is analysed in the GeoSenseAI® platform, enabling precise risk detection even in urban areas prone to interference.

The result: an AI-supported early warning system that automatically informs emergency services, enhances safety and enables data-driven optimisation of infrastructure and risk management.

AI-based visitor analysis in the Alpine region

Smart people counting and visitor management at the Nordkette and Arzler Trail

In collaboration with the operators, GMD is implementing an AI-based system at the Nordkette via ferrata and the Arzler Trail to analyse visitor flows in the alpine region. The solution continuously records visitor numbers, movement patterns and peak times, thereby creating a robust data foundation for the targeted optimisation of infrastructure, safety and visitor management. By combining radar-based sensors with AI-supported analysis, the system operates reliably even under changing alpine conditions – fully GDPR-compliant and without personal identification.

The result: precise insights into visitor flows, relief for sensitive areas, and a reliable foundation for safety measures, trail management and sustainable infrastructure planning.

01. June 2024

On June 1st, GMD GmbH was awarded the prestigious VSE – Verified Social Enterprise Label by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Labor. This recognition honors the company's social commitment and sustainable innovation, highlighting its valuable contribution to natural hazard prevention and the protection of critical infrastructure through advanced technological solutions.

17. April 2024

On April 17, 2024, as part of a flagship project in collaboration with the City of Kufstein and the State of Tyrol, a total of 20 state-of-the-art sensors were installed at Kufstein Fortress. This innovative measure enables the precise monitoring of the historic structure and the early detection of potential risks, ensuring its long-term safety and preservation.
