Facing natural hazards with confidence.

GMD® supports municipalities, authorities, and infrastructure operators with smart protection solutions against heavy rainfall, floods, and land slides.

Detect early. Protect effectively.

Natural hazard monitoring for safer communities and resilient infrastructure.

With more and more extreme weather events, risks for municipalities, transport routes, and protective structures increase.
GMD® provides smart IoT sensors and the AI-powered GeoSense-AI platform to detect heavy rainfall, floods, debris flows, or rockfalls at an early stage.

Reliable data, available early on, enables emergency services to respond faster, reduce damage, and save lives.

Case Studies

AI-based visitor analysis in the Alpine region

Smart people counting and visitor management at the Nordkette and Arzler Trail

In collaboration with the operators, GMD is implementing an AI-based system at the Nordkette via ferrata and the Arzler Trail to analyse visitor flows in the alpine region. The solution continuously records visitor numbers, movement patterns and peak times, thereby creating a robust data foundation for the targeted optimisation of infrastructure, safety and visitor management. By combining radar-based sensors with AI-supported analysis, the system operates reliably even under changing alpine conditions – fully GDPR-compliant and without personal identification.

The result: precise insights into visitor flows, relief for sensitive areas, and a reliable foundation for safety measures, trail management and sustainable infrastructure planning.

Pilot project with the Rhaetian Railway for smart infrastructure monitoring

In collaboration with the Rhaetian Railway, GMD is implementing an innovative monitoring system to monitor the Carrerabach stream in sensitive areas of alpine infrastructure. The solution continuously records hydrological and geotechnical data, thereby providing a solid basis for early hazard assessment and for safe, data-driven decisions regarding operations and maintenance. By combining modern sensor technology with intelligent data analysis, the system operates reliably even under demanding alpine conditions.

The result: a state-of-the-art early warning system that proactively supports infrastructure operators, enhances safety and enables data-driven optimisation of operations and maintenance, with the potential for international deployment as a reference solution.

Digital Wall Security System in Kufstein

Precision sensor technology for the long-term preservation of historic buildings

In collaboration with the City of Kufstein, GMD is implementing a self-contained multi-sensor solution at Kufstein Fortress to monitor historic walls. The system continuously records micro-movements, vibrations and environmental influences, and detects potential hazards at an early stage even under challenging conditions in hard-to-reach areas and subject to heritage conservation requirements. The combination of seismic sensors, acceleration measurement and Edge IoT enables precise real-time analysis of structural stability.

The result: early detection of changes, targeted maintenance and a sustainable contribution to the protection of the historic building fabric as well as safety against rockfall.

Alpine drinking water monitoring

Neue Prager Hütte (DAV)

In collaboration with the DAV, GMD is implementing an innovative, self-sufficient sensor system at the Neue Prager Hütte to monitor the drinking water supply in high-altitude mountain regions. The system reliably measures spring flow, water levels and water extraction even under extreme conditions at altitudes of over 2,800 metres, without the need for existing energy or data infrastructure. A specially developed IoT architecture enables the stable transmission of measurement data to the GMD® platform, where it is processed for the DAV.

The result: precise real-time data on water availability, optimised planning of hut operations and a sound basis for climate-adaptive water management strategies.
