Together with the City of Kufstein, the State of Tyrol, HTB Bau, the University of Innsbruck and the MCI , GMD® GmbH has implemented one of the most innovative AI-supported monitoring systems in Austria for the prevention of natural hazards at the historical Kufstein Fortress. The project combines autonomous seismic sensors and rockfall sensors with the GeoSenseAI® WEBGIS4D platform to monitor rock areas, rockfall protection nets, and critical infrastructure in real-time.
A total of 20 intelligent AI sensors have been installed on the rock walls of the fortress as well as in the rockfall protection nets. They detect even the smallest ground movements, vibrations, and structural changes. Using edge AI, machine learning, and real-time data analysis, potential rockfalls and other gravitational natural hazards can be detected at an early stage. This enables preventive maintenance measures, increases the safety of visitors, and sustainably protects one of the most important cultural monuments of Tyrol.
As a flagship project, the installation demonstrates how artificial intelligence, IoT sensor networks, and digital twins can help make historical buildings and critical infrastructures more resilient to the increasing impacts of climate change and natural hazards.
