Invest in climate resilience: AI early warning for natural hazards

GMD® – Geomorphing Detection develops energy-autonomous edge IoT sensors and the AI platform GeoSenseAI® for the early detection of debris flows, floods, rockfall and slope movements. Recurring revenue from a rental model, proprietary hardware, offices in Innsbruck and Landquart – and project enquiries from Europe, Asia and North America.

Investing with impact: every euro invested goes into technology that protects people and preserves alpine habitats – and we report this contribution measurably every year.

Impact · Double return

Every euro invested protects people and biodiversity – measurably

An investment in GMD® works twice: economically through a scalable business model, and socially by protecting civilians and preserving sensitive alpine ecosystems. We do not just claim this contribution – we measure and disclose it.

Protecting civilians

Early warning across the catchment gives municipalities, fire brigades and operators lead time for closures, evacuations and protecting emergency crews – drone situation reports spare dangerous reconnaissance in the hazard zone.

We report annually per project:

  • People and buildings in the monitored hazard zone
  • Monitored transport routes – rail, road, hiking trails
  • Warnings issued and lead time achieved

Protecting biodiversity

Knowing exactly what happens in the channel and on the slope enables targeted protection: measurement data helps avoid unnecessary engineering works in sensitive alpine ecosystems, plan protective structures as needed and manage high-mountain water resources sustainably.

We report annually per project:

  • Monitored area in alpine ecosystems
  • Projects with avoided or reduced engineering works
  • Energy-autonomous sensor operation via solar and battery

Why now: a global problem growing faster than adaptation

Debris flows, flash floods, landslides and wildfires hit mountain regions and settlements on every continent. Weather-related events now cause most natural catastrophe losses worldwide – and in many regions hardly any of it is insured.

Regulatory tailwind

The European Climate Risk Assessment (EUCRA 2024) essentially concludes that Europe’s adaptation is not keeping pace with rapidly growing risks. In its 2026 work programme, the European Commission announced an integrated framework for climate resilience and risk management, with the proposal planned for Q4 2026. Measurement data, early warning and risk evidence are moving from nice-to-have to must-have.

Market potential: globally addressable, proven in the Alps

The Alps are our beachhead market: the toughest conditions, the highest willingness to pay, strong references. From here, the same technology scales to mountain and flood-prone regions worldwide. For the home market, we derive the market in two ways – top-down from market studies and protection budgets, bottom-up from catchments requiring monitoring and our revenue per project. Both lead to the same order of magnitude.

TAM – total market

Global market for IoT-based natural hazard detection: from USD 0.3 bn (2022) to USD 1.7 bn by 2027, growing 36% a year. Wider natural disaster management market: from USD 64 bn (2024) to USD 114 bn by 2029 (12.3% p. a.).

Source: MarketsandMarkets, Natural Disaster Detection IoT Market

SAM – beachhead market: the Alps

Core market Austria and Switzerland around EUR 46–77 m per year; extended to the Alpine arc in Germany, Italy, France and Slovenia plus insurance data, around EUR 90–150 m per year.

SOM – obtainable share 2030

Conservatively around EUR 4 m (bottom-up from projects); the financial model plans EUR 11.2 m revenue – about 7–12% of the extended SAM. The plan figure assumes expansion beyond the Alpine core market.

Top-down: projection from protection budgets

  1. Switzerland: around CHF 2.9 bn per year spent on natural hazard protection, of which CHF 1.3 bn on prevention (PLANAT/FOEN).
  2. Austria: the Torrent and Avalanche Control service invested EUR 155 m in 2025; in Tyrol alone, EUR 106.7 m from federal, state and municipal sources flows into protection measures in 2026.
  3. Combined prevention budget AT + CH around EUR 1.55 bn (assumption).
  4. Share for digital monitoring and early warning: 3–5% → around EUR 46–77 m per year.

Bottom-up: from catchments to revenue

  1. Around 12,000 torrent catchments are registered by Austria’s Torrent and Avalanche Control service.
  2. Of these, 5% with high damage potential for settlements or transport routes → around 600 catchments.
  3. Annual revenue per catchment: 10–15 rented sensors including GeoSenseAI® → around EUR 16–52 k.
  4. Result for Austrian torrents alone: around EUR 10–31 m per year. Switzerland, rockfall, slope movements and transport corridors come on top.

International expansion markets

Debris flows, flash floods and landslides are not an Alpine niche. The same autonomous sensors and platform address mountain and river regions worldwide – wherever infrastructure is missing and lead time saves lives.

Business model: four revenue streams, mostly recurring

Municipalities and operators do not buy equipment – they subscribe to an ongoing service. This lowers the barrier to entry for customers and creates predictable, recurring revenue.

Recurring

Sensor rental

Proprietary, energy-autonomous edge IoT sensors, gateways and weather stations – billed monthly per sensor.

Recurring

GeoSenseAI® SaaS

AI platform for situational awareness, threshold alerts, 4D WebGIS and event documentation – per sensor and app booked.

Project

Operations

Installation in channels and on rock faces, maintenance, project delivery and LiDAR terrain models by drone.

Scalable

DataHub

Processed measurement, Copernicus and model data for insurers, planners and research – without additional hardware.

Already in operation

Real-world deployments under extreme alpine conditions prove reliability and value.

Frequently asked questions from investors

How large is the market for natural hazard early warning systems?

According to MarketsandMarkets, the global market for IoT-based natural hazard detection is expected to reach USD 1.7 bn by 2027, growing 36% a year. In its Alpine beachhead market, GMD® estimates around EUR 90–150 m per year; enquiries from India, the USA and Italy show the potential far beyond.

How does GMD® make money?

Through four revenue streams: sensor rental and GeoSenseAI® licences as recurring revenue, plus installation and operations as well as data products from the DataHub.

What sets GMD® apart from competitors?

GMD® measures across the entire catchment rather than only at the protective structure, develops its own energy-autonomous hardware and delivers sensors, platform and operations from a single source.

How is the impact of my investment measured?

Through impact indicators per project – such as people and buildings protected in the hazard zone, monitored transport routes, warning lead times and monitored area in alpine ecosystems. GMD® reports them annually; the methodology is in the data room.

Is GMD® only active in the Alps?

No. The Alps are our reference and home market. The technology is built for regions without power or mobile coverage and can therefore be deployed worldwide; first project enquiries are already coming from India, the USA and Italy.

How can I invest?

Contact Steve Weingarth, Managing Director, at investor-relations@gmd.care. After an initial call, qualified investors receive access to the data room.
