Together with the Tyrol State , GMD® GmbH is developing an innovative pilot project for intelligent visitor management and environmental analysis at the Hafelekar Ferrata and the Arzler Trail in Innsbruck. The aim is to collect visitor flows anonymously and in compliance with data protection laws to enhance safety, protect sensitive natural spaces, and enable informed decisions for sustainable visitor management.
For this purpose, AI-supported radar sensors, smart weather stations, and the GeoSenseAI® WEBGIS4D platform are utilized. The solution analyzes visitor frequencies in real-time, distinguishes between different user groups such as hikers and mountain bikers, and links this information with weather and environmental data. Based on this, digital twins of the deployment areas are created, enabling data-driven planning, risk assessment, and long-term optimization of natural resource management.
The pilot project demonstrates how artificial intelligence, IoT sensor technology, and modern geodata platforms can contribute to sustainably protecting alpine recreational areas, intelligently managing visitor flows, and minimizing the impacts of increasing recreational traffic on people and nature.
