Rhaetian Railway – AI-Powered Early Warning System for the Carrerabach

In collaboration with the Rhaetian Railway (RhB) and the Office for Forests and Natural Hazards of the Canton of Graubünden, GMD® GmbH is developing an innovative AI-powered early warning and monitoring system for the Carrerabach catchment. The pilot project aims to predict natural hazards such as flash floods, debris flows, and channel blockages not just minutes before an event, but hours to days in advance.

The solution combines autonomous radar water level sensors, weather stations, webcams, and an intelligent Mesh IoT communication network with the GeoSenseAI® WEBGIS4D platform. By integrating real-time sensor data, high-resolution weather forecasts, hydrological models, and artificial intelligence, the system creates a digital twin of the catchment area that continuously assesses risks and generates automated early warnings.

The project strengthens the resilience of railway infrastructure, enables proactive operational planning, and helps reduce service disruptions and damage to critical infrastructure. At the same time, the pilot serves as a scalable reference solution for protecting additional railway corridors and alpine catchments across Europe.
